Learn To Speak Spanish And Enrich Your Life

Filed under: Story — admin @ 11:13 am

“You want to learn to speak Spanish, Mom?” My 12-year old girl asked me over breakfast the other day. I nodded and smiled at her. “But who will you speak Spanish with? There is no one that we know speaks Spanish.” She’s got a point there.

When I was young, my first introduction to a foreign language, which was English, started in my kindergarten class. We sang nursery rhymes like Baa Baa Black Sheep, Hickory Dickory Dock, London Bridge, and many more. My favourite was Mary Had A Little Lamb. I used to imagine being Mary and running around with a pet lamb. But what really burnt into my memory was the picture of the cute snowy lamb from the book. In actual fact I have never seen a live lamb before.

When I grew older and had my own kids, I came across on the television some very interesting telenovelas from Latin America like “Secreto De Amor” and “Betty Le Fea”. All these telenovelas were in Spanish. I loved watching them, but having to rely on the not so perfect sub-titles somehow killed the fun. Worse still, there were times when the local tv station would dub the show into the national language. The drama and the ‘fire’ in the telenovelas just did not get ignited. I would rather watch them in Spanish even though I did not understand what they were saying. Anyway, that was where all the action and drama were, in the Spanish language itself.

I wanted to learn Spanish so that I can enjoy the telenovelas better. So I went online, surfed the net and found some online courses. But learning a new language and having no one to talk to in Spanish made learning more difficult. Thus, I tried the fun way. I downloaded some Spanish songs plus their lyrics in Spanish and their translation in English. I then started to do a karaoke bit and thus made learning the language much more enjoyable. Hence, I initiated the slow but interesting road to learning to speak Spanish.

7 reasons why you should learn Spanish:-

1. So that we can enjoy the Spanish telenovelas which are often full of adventures and intrigues. Unless you know the language, you are always left hanging not knowing what was really happening most of the time.

2. Be able to communicate with Spanish-speaking friends better and learn of their culture through the understanding of their mother tongue. You can make lifelong friends among Spanish-speaking communities. Having lifelong international friends not only opens future travel opportunities but makes you a cultural ambassador both at home and abroad.

3. Learn Spanish to enhance your travelling experiences, especially if you going to Spanish-speaking countries. Local people are always excited if a traveller can speak to them in their own language.

4. Knowing Spanish as a second language can improve your employment potential. Just having a basic knowledge can separate you from the crowd of applicants. This is especially true if you are applying to be nurses, social workers, teachers, salespeople, translators, and many more. Bilingual employees often receive a larger salary than their non-Spanish speaking counterparts.

5. Many high schools, colleges and universities offer study abroad opportunities. If you choose a Spanish-speaking country, you would live, breathe and blend into the culture easily and come home with an appreciation of their day-to-day life. Learning Spanish also open up access to areas of “high” culture such as art, literature, and history.

6. Learning Spanish makes acquiring the next foreign language easier. Once you know Spanish, other languages such as Italian, French, Portuguese, or even ancient Latin, will almost seem like “cousins” to the Spanish you have already learned.

7. If you get to meet stars the likes of Gloria Estefan, Penelope Cruz, Antonio Banderas, and Salma Hayak face-to-face you can get their attention by speaking fluent Spanish when asking for their autographs. You might even gain a celebrity friend!

The author believes that learning a second and third language really do enrich one’s life considerably. While doing a karaoke stint with Spanish songs may help, undergoing a reliable Spanish language course is definitely the best thing towards speaking Spanish fluently.

Brazil – A Great Opportunity For Buying Real Estate

Filed under: Story — admin @ 11:13 am

Brazil is more than beaches and Carnival, but that would be enough reason to travel there. Brazil is the largest country in South America, taking up almost half of the continent, extending from north of the Equator to south of the Tropic of Capricorn. It’s population of around 180 million is the largest in South America. It’s 2 major cities, Sao Paulo and Rio de Janiero are among the largest in world. The nation’s natural beauty is reflected in its variety of geographic locations, from Sugar Loaf Mountain in the city of Rio de Janeiro, to the magnificent Iguazu Falls in the south, to the Amazon basin in the North, there’s something for almost every taste… snow skiers excepted.

Why Property in Brazil

* Prices for property in Brazil are up to 70% cheaper than similar European Resorts
* Brazil has a lower cost of living and offers a dream lifestyle for property owners
* Brazil has it all – sunshine, beaches, nature and a friendly vibrant culture
* The Brazilian government has placed a top priority on promoting tourism
* In recent research 96% of tourists visiting Brazil plan to return
* Brazil is the 5th largest country in the world with the 10th largest economy
* According to investment bank Goldman Sachs Brazil with be the world’s 5th largest
* Brazil is the emerging property market with the greatest buzz
* Direct flights from London Gatwick and Manchester Airports

Brazil reported a gross domestic product growth rate of 4.3% in the first quarter of 2007, and its currency – the real – has appreciated 10% against the U.S. dollar so far this year.

The World Tourism Organisation (WTO) reports that Brazil received 5.4 million tourists in 2005, which was nearly a third of all the tourists visiting South America as a whole during that year. This generated US$3.9 billion in foreign currency exchange from tourists. By 2006, tourist figures in Brazil had reached an impressive 6.3 million. The WTO predict strong performance for property travel and tourism demand in Brazil for 2007, growing at a rate of 7.2%. This forecast points to a rapid but steady phase of growth in both the short- and medium-term.

Brazil is far from sitting on its tourism laurels, however. The Government’s National Tourism Plan has identified concrete economical objectives for the foreseeable future. These include the target of over 9 million tourists visiting the country annually, the target of generating US$8 billion in foreign currency, and increasing the number of domestic travelers to 65 million annually.

The fact that Brazilian properties are still available at low prices, combined with a pro-active brazilian Government that is taking a long term attitude to investment into infrastructure improvements and into tourism, will result in inherent rises in property prices, thereby creating a lucrative Brazil market. Additionally, the market is still in its infancy and indicators to its future are highly positive, all aspects that make it a prime emerging market.

Why Invest in Brazil Land?
By investing in land you are getting in at the ground floor with the potential for much high returns than developed properties. You will be investing at pre-construction prices which means as facilities such as roads, golf courses, beach clubs, restaurants are added they are all adding value to your investment. This type of investment is suited to the more sophisticted investor looking for high returns over a longer timeline.

Brazil offers prime undeveloped land in one of the very best locations in Brazil. When buying land identifying a prime location is one of the most important considerations.

Brazil Apartments

The Elegance Natal Golf Resort is located in Natal, the capital city of Rio Grande do Norte in northeastern Brazil. Natal is the safest city in Brazil and one if its most popular family holiday destinations. Enjoying a near perfect climate with an average temperature of 28 degrees centigrade and over 300 days of sunshine every year. As well as the world famous beaches, Natal itself has a lively nightlife with many restaurants, cafes and bars.

This spectacular resort is situated on over four miles of beautiful beach offering a great range of amenities including:

* 5 Golf Courses to PGA tournament standard
* Ocean Boardwalk
* Spa and health resorts
* Tennis Courts
* Horse Riding Facilities
* Heliport
* Ronaldo football academy
* Beach club
* 24 hour Security
* Shopping Malls
* Resort Hotel

Brazil Villas

Brazil is world famous for its beach living and easy going lifestyle. There is no better way to enjoy this than in your own luxury villa in Brazil.

Major tour operators such as Thomson are now are offering Brazil as a premier beach destination. Billions are being invested in hotel, luxury villa and resort development in the North East of Brazil. Of its three villas resorts in South America, Club Med has decided to site all of them in Brazil.

When compared to many tropical destinations, Brazil benefits from having no history of hurricanes, tropical storms, earthquakes and tsunamis.

Foreign investment into real estate is actively encouraged in Brazil; foreigners can own 100% of land and property within the country, which is not always the case in emerging markets. This is viewed as a major contributory factor, alongside the favourable currency exchange rate for foreigner investment. This has enabled direct foreign investment into real estate in Brazil to soar. A staggering US$1.3 billion was invested by foreigners in 2006 alone.

Off Plan Property in Brazil

Many people are adding off plan property to their investment portfolios to benefit from the excellent returns which are occurring in many areas. Off-plan property is one of the most popular investment types due to the historic gains enjoyed by many people from all over the world.

Buying a property off plan in Brazil means you are buying before construction has begun. This may sound like a risk, however in recent years this means of property investment has become immensely popular as it offers a way for property investors to get ahead. By buying today you are securing your off plan investment property at today’s prices. After the property has been completed it is highly likely to have risen in value. This means if you can only just afford to invest in Brazil at today’s prices if you wait until completion you may very well have been priced out of the market.

Brazilian off plan property offers the chance to invest at around 30% off the retail price of the finished property. This means you can choose to realise an immediate gain once the property is completed. With developments with particularly high investor interest it can be possible to sell for a profit before construction has been completed.

The Brazilian real estate market is full of potential and offers an excellent opportunity to maximize profits on your property purchase, with very favorable exchange rates adding further value. Real estate in Brazil and particularly in north east Brazil around Natal, Fortaleza and Bahia, offers perhaps the most exciting investment opportunity anywhere in the world today. As is true of all emerging markets, the early bird catches the worm and early investors will see the greatest returns on investment. In an area of such obvious growth and potential, property purchasers are confident they will experience substantial financial gains as the demand for property in Brazil increases.

Located in the corner of South America, Natal is an extremely pleasant city, with a tropical climate, recognized as the city with the purest air of America.

With its dozens of white beaches, such as Ponta Negra and Morro do Careca Natal is a most popular beach location and now international real estate investment is really emerging as a major market with many luxury off-plan developments being built and at very affordable prices. Tourism is the most important industry of Natal, with real estate running in second place to this. Industry experts predict 400% capital growth for Brazil property in the Natal region over the next 10 years. The local government is investing billions into the local infrastructure to make this one of the worlds number one tourist destinations. They intend to attract 9 million tourists each year and more than 1 million local jobs. In a small area of coast there are more than 20 golf courses planned. The new Natal suspension bridge has opened up the stunning northern coast to property development. And the new Airport will be the largest in South America, the 5th largest in the world. The combination of sea, sand dunes, lagoons, a rich and varied gastronomy, an array of leisure and entertainment and a pleasant and hospitable people makes Natal irresistible.

Bahia is a great tropical paradise of tremendous value. It is without a doubt one of the most important tourism destinations in South America with its numerous attractions and pleasant climate throughout most of the year. Beaches, islands, rivers, caves and mountains are just a few examples of the many landscapes of this land, which is known for its great cultural diversity. Extensive conservation areas, delicious local cuisine and a wealth of folk traditions are other elements that make the state even more attractive to visitors. The Salvador area (Capital of Bahia) is far the most frequently visited. Real Estate investment is on the upswing driven by Bahia is over 1000 kilometers of pristine beaches, growing infrastructure and the warm hospitality of its people. The world has woken up to the real estate potential in Bahia but owning or renting your dream den in Bahia is no longer a dream.

Where Can I Download Movies? Here Are A Few Tips

Filed under: Story — admin @ 11:13 am

When you ask the question, “where can I download movies?” you need to weigh up three things: what is the customer service like, how easy is the site to use, and how big and varied is their selection. The competitive nature of movie download sites is such that it can be very confusing for the beginner. It’s not so much, “where can I download movies” as “which site should I use to download movies from”. Here are a few things to look out for…

1. Look for unlimited download access, especially to new movies. If you also have access to music, games and software, then that’s a bonus too.

2. Does the site have a step-by-step tutorial? Most of the good ones do, and it will cut down on the learning curve, but it’s not essential.

3. Can you search for movies before committing yourself to a membership? This is definitely a plus point.

4. Does the site have free CD and DVD recording and burning software available? Many do have this, and it can be a very useful feature if you don’t already have this.

5. Is their customer support fast and friendly? You only really need this when something goes wrong. But it’s exactly at that time that your frustration becomes intolerable if you can’t get through to someone for help! I would rate good customer support very highly. Try asking a question or two before committing yourself, and monitor the response.

There are other features that you might want, but these are the important ones. So if the question of “where can I download movies?” has overwhelmed you with the sheer number of places available, you can go through my checklist and weed out the ones that don’t match up.

Did you find these tips useful? You can download files 300 x faster — and learn the answer to, “Where can I download movies?” from this resource, http://www.3minuteguides.com/download-movies.html

The 13 Best Horror Movies For Halloween

Filed under: Story — admin @ 11:13 am

It’s not easy to create a horror movie that doesn’t rely solely on sudden loud noises or gore to shock viewers – which is perhaps why so few films in the horror genre rise above mediocre. A movie like Carrie has some wonderful scenes, but the overall mood is ruined by shifts in tone as if it can’t make up its mind what kind of movie to be. Hellraiser has its share of frightening scenes, but the overabundance of gore makes it difficult to watch. And movies like Portergeist suffer from being too absurd, concocting elaborate explanations for the supernatural. What I admire are movies that create a sense of horror with more subtlety and artistry. While the following movies are not all completely in the “horror” genre, they all thematically deal with horror. In alphabetical order, here are my top 13 picks to put you in the Halloween spirit.

1. The Blair Witch Project – 1999, dir. Daniel Myrick, Eduardo Sanchez. This modest, low-budget film proved that you don’t need flashy special effects to successfully create a mood of terror. The story is presented as a documentary of actual amateur footage found in the woods after three students vanish while researching a local legend known as the Blair Witch. We become the characters, watching the footage from their perspective in the viewfinder as they filmed it, which draws us in and heightens the chilling climax.

2. Carnival of Souls – 1962, dir. Herk Harvey. While on her way to take a job as a church organist, a woman is haunted by a bizarre apparition. It compels her to an abandoned lakeside pavilion, beginning an eerie chain of events. Harvey’s macabre, low-budget masterpiece, with its appropriately eerie organ score, has become a cult classic.

3. Donnie Darko – 2001, dir. Richard Kelly. Time travel, an improbably terrifying man in a rabbit costume and a protagonist who may or may not be slipping into mental illness form the mystery at the core of this cult film that straddles sci-fi and horror, yet is much more than either genre. Jake Gyllenhaal plays Donnie Darko, a troubled teenager in suburban Virginia who tries to make sense of seemingly disconnected, baffling threads and hallucinations. Everything finally comes together on the night before Halloween, when Donnie is forced to confront a decision that will change his future, and his past.

4. The Exorcist – 1973, dir. William Friedkin. Even putting aside the hype, this remains one of the all-time best horror films. Ellen Burstyn plays a mother who becomes distraught over the increasingly bizarre behavior of her daughter (played by Linda Blair). Not wanting to admit the possibility that her daughter has become possessed by the devil, she nevertheless agrees at last to bring in an exorcist. The minimalist music from Tubular Bells by Mike Oldfield, which builds slowly and inevitably like the movie, was not originally composed with horror in mind, but just a few bars of the theme can raise the hairs on the back of your neck.

5. The Haunting (original version) – 1963, dir. Robert Wise. This is the original film version of Shirley Jackson’s novel about a paranormal investigator and his three companions who gather in an old house known for its terrible past. Claire Bloom plays the psychologically fragile Nell who slowly falls under the maleficent spell of the house. Despite a few campy moments that don’t date well, the movie still manages to retain its power. Wise understood that terror often lies in what is not revealed.

6. The Nightmare Before Christmas – 1993, dir. Henry Selick (written by Tim Burton). In this inventive stop-action fantasy, the leader of Halloween Town (known as Jack Skellington, the “king of the pumpkin patch”) conspires to breathe new life into the repetitive celebration of Halloween by kidnapping Santa Claus and imposing his own dark spin on Christmas. The visuals are engaging, and the ghoulish music by Danny Elfman brings just the right balance of humor and good-natured fright.

7. Onibaba – 1964, dir. Kaneto Shindo. This black-and-white Japanese horror movie takes place during the 14th century civil wars that rocked the country and resulted in mass starvation. A woman and her daughter-in-law survive by selling the armor of wayward warriors that the two women lure to their death. The element of the supernatural is subtle, and the minimalist use of images such as wind-blown pampas grass beneath a dark sky or the Noh demon mask is masterly.

8. The Others – 2001, dir. Alejandro Amenabar. Nicole Kidman plays a nervous woman who escapes to the English countryside with her two photophobic children during World War II, waiting for her husband to return from the front. This twist on the classic haunted house theme is done with just the right touch of pathos and supernatural dread.

9. The Phantom of the Opera (original version) – 1925, dir. Rupert Julian. Lon Chaney appeared in the title role in this silent film about a masked, disfigured musician who haunts the Paris Opera House and falls in love with one of the Opera’s singers. It is famous for Chaney’s intentionally horrific, self-applied make-up. Later remakes, including the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, are rather lame in comparison to the power and horror of the original.

10. Pitch Black – 2000, dir. David Twohy. It may have the facade of a sci-fi movie, but the story is really about one of our primal fears: the dark. A merchant ship crashes on a desolate planet where two suns keep the planet in seemingly perpetual daylight. The survivors discover a mysteriously abandoned outpost and slowly come to realize that something horrific waits to be released when the planet is subject to the darkness of a total eclipse. Vin Diesel plays the convict with special vision who they must learn to trust in order to survive the night. This movie scared the pants off me.

11. Scary Movie 3 – 2003, dir. David Zucker. The horror genre is ripe for parody, and the third installment of the Scary Movie franchise skewers not only flicks like The Ring and The Others but everything from American Idol to Michael Jackson. The scene at the wake had me laughing so hard it hurt.

12. Shutter (original version) – 2004, dir. Banjong Pisanthanakun and Parkpoom Wongpoom. A photographer and his girlfriend accidentally run over a young woman who appears out of nowhere on a dark highway, then guiltily flee the scene. The dead woman begins to intrude into their lives, appearing first in photographs and gradually taking on a more corporeal presence. The final scene is a disturbing image that will haunt you long after the movie ends. Be sure to watch the original Thai version, not the American remake.

13. The Silence of the Lambs – 1991, dir. Jonathan Demme. Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins star in this thriller about an FBI agent who seeks the help of a convicted homicidal psychiatrist to track down a serial killer. Rather than the supernatural, it’s reality that makes this film so frightening, eliciting our fear of the real-life monsters in our midst.

Who Wins The Mikkel Kessler and Anthony Mundine Boxing Rematch

Filed under: Story — admin @ 11:15 am

Mikkel Kessler is coming off a loss to Joe Calzaghe and his promoter called out Anthony Mundine this week. A rematch between the two would easily be the biggest fight in the super middle weight division since Joe Calzaghe has moved up to the light heavy weight division to challenge Bernard Hopkins. Kessler won the first match against Mundine rather easily scoring a wide unanimous decision.

Here are some reasons why the rematch would be very different:

1. Kessler is coming off a loss, his first of his career. He will lack some confidence in the early rounds against Mundine.

2. Mundine has improved since fighting Kessler last time, destroying two highly rated fighters in Danny Green and Sam Soliman.

3. In the first match between the two Mundine would not let his hands go. When he did he had Kessler in trouble, especially in the opening four rounds and the last round.

4. The only factor I see in Kesslers favour is that he will be more hungry after coming off a loss. If he is I think he could win a wide unanimous decision again.

Kessler is obviously the favourite in this fight and should win if every thing goes to plan. But he is taking on his toughest test in the division and that is straight after loosing to Calzaghe. Mundine is an improving fighter and he has great hand speed and power and world class defence. This fight is going to be very close, both can win and it will likely occur in Australia.

Jon Jost, Independent Film-maker – 1, 2, 3, Four

Filed under: Story — admin @ 11:13 am

Jon Jost, independent film-maker. The early films

4. 1, 2, 3, Four

Jon Jost’s ‘1, 2, 3, Four’ (1969-70) is another early short from which elements, both thematic and formal, can be traced into the features. It is an essay on political and social problems, constructed as a montage of images, dialogue, printed texts, readings, and action. The arrangement of these elements creates a dialectical process in which points of view are played off against one another both within each scene, and in the juxtaposition of scenes.

One short scene neatly illustrates Jost’s aim (discussed earlier in connection with the scene which pans across four people) of translating his ideas into film:

A man is sitting at a work bench assembling a bomb, while reading aloud a passage which equates poetry and revolution. At the end of the reading he drops a lighted match into a tin can, and a little explosion sends up a puff of smoke. In front of the can is a clapper-board.

Jost is equating his film with a terrorist’s bomb, both being intended to shock us into taking note of a message, and at the same time asserting his belief that a film is a better medium for the communication of his radical ideas than a bomb. Jost’s bomb is purely visual, a harmless but potent tool designed to entertain us while he delivers his message.

The main subject of the film, however, is the difficulty of communication between people with polarised attitudes. Subtitled ‘An Essay on Domestic Problems’, (domestic in two senses), the film looks at private conflict and national conflict, and at the inseparability of the two. Perhaps the most important kind of polarisation, with regard to later development in the features, is that between male and female attitudes. The couple in the film do not talk to, or listen to each other, they are constantly arguing, and therefore not communicating.

He puts a record on the stereo, she takes it off. He puts it on again, she takes it off again.

He: “Why are we living together?”

She: “Because you don’t like to be alone. And because you’re good in bed.”

Voice: “How do you translate happiness?”

She: “Money.”

Voice: “How do you translate love?”

She: “F – .”

He: “The dishes are dirty.”

She: (angry) “I don’t feel like doing the dishes.”

A plate is smashed.

Persistent confrontation without communication leads to the impoverishment of human values, such as love and happiness, and to destruction. And any hope of communication is thwarted by their irreconcilable attitudes to life.

She: “Are you happy?”

He: “I can’t be happy while General Motors exists.”

She: “What would make you happy?”

He: “To be rid of General Motors. Or to be fighting against General Motors.”

He: ”What would make you happy?”

She: “A garden, a river, the sky.”

We see her walking naked through a wood, but this pastoral fantasy is shattered by the roar of a jet aeroplane overhead.

This fundamental incompatibility of male and female is a recurring theme in Jost’s work. The woman is content to exist, and looks for fulfilment in the quality of her day-to-day life, but the man can only define his existence in terms of what he does, he needs to live for something. This view is expounded in the short ‘A Man is More than the Sum of His Parts A Woman is . . . ‘ (1971), in which women are likened to a queen bee, and men to the workers and drones. ‘l, 2, 3, Four’ takes the insect metaphor even further, likening woman to the female spider which seduces the male then consumes him while he copulates. These daunting, and perhaps misogynistic views might be seen as underlying the male/female relationships in ‘Last Chants for a Slow Dance’ and ‘Slow Moves’.

‘1, 2, 3, Four’ ends with an attempt at reconciliation. We are given this argument connecting domestic life to political issues: ‘If you traced the wires by which electricity reaches your home back to their source, you would find a pile of dead bodies’. Then, coupled with an image of a candle being blown out, a girl says: “I love you, therefore I will never use electricity again.” This final conceit synthesises the opposites, male and female, rational and irrational, political awareness and personal love. But it is absurd and impossible. It seems there is no real solution.

The film ends on a close-up of a happy-looking couple, leaning against their house with arms around each other. But how long can such happiness last? How long will it be before irreconcilable conflict sets in?
