A History Of Hummer

Filed under: Story — admin @ 11:13 am

Hummer was originally developed in 1979 in response to the Army’s need for the development of a high mobility multi-purpose wheeled vehicle. In the race to create such a vehicle was Teledyne, Chrysler defense and AM General; it is AM General who succeeded the competition and created what is now known as the Hummer.

Eleven months after it’s initial design AM General’s Hummer design was being tested in the Nevada desert. The Hummers design had to fit a stringent set of requirements for the army, it had to have light amour, deep water fording capability, and Arctic and desert operational ability to name just a few. In January 1985 Hummer produced it first fully equipped and ready for action vehicle. The Hummer became famed for its role during the American Army’s Operation Desert Storm Operation in the Gulf War; and has continued to be used during combat ever since.

It was in 1992 that AM General began producing the Hummer for civilian use, rumor has it that this was in response from Arnold Schwarzenegger who saw a platoon of the vehicles during the filming of Kindergarten Cop. H1, the first civilian model, retained many of the original features of the Hummer minus the combat machinery, this lead to the vehicles great popularity amongst those seeking the ultimate in toughness and mobility.

In 1999 Hummer sales slowed significantly and AM General went into partnership with GM Motors to jointly pursue product, marketing and distribution opportunities for Hummer; in doing so GM secured the exclusive ownership of the Hummer brand meaning securing the company with the rights to use the Hummer brand on any future vehicles, although AM General still reserve the right to build the H1. General Motors wasted no time and set about developing the H2 model based on GM’s Tahoe vehicle.

Now 20 years old, the Hummer is still humming along and is now available in a variety of models. What’s even more incredible is the stretch Hummer Limo that are now being custom produced and kitted out in the ultimate accessories; such as LCD TV’s, bars and mini dance floors.

Strength Training and Weight Loss

Filed under: Story — admin @ 11:13 am

Did you know that strength training is crucial for successfully losing weight and keeping it off? I’m talking about weight-bearing exercise. It doesn’t have to be a huge, hulking workout where you’re trying to look like Arnold Schwarzenegger in his prime, it just has to be some basic strength training.

Losing muscle is a bad thing. Muscle tissue is very active–it burns a lot of calories. Every pound of muscle burns about 35 calories per day. Using the above example, if you lost 12 pounds, then, you lost three pounds of muscle. You would be burning 105 less calories per day or 3150 per month. Since there are 3500 calories in a pound of fat, you would gain almost one pound of fat per month just from the muscle mass that you lost!

Why is strength training and losing weight that important? Because a lot of people try to starve themselves into weight loss. They think it’s all about controlling calories. Unfortunately, a lot of dieticians and nutritionists don’t really understand strength training, and they also think that it’s just about calories. Calories in, calories out. If you have a calorie deficit, you’re going to lose weight, if you consume extra calories, you’ll gain body fat. While that’s true, it’s only part of the picture. Sure, you need a calorie deficit to lose weight, but how does your body actually use calories? It’s your lean body mass, that muscle mass underneath your body fat, that burns calories 24/7, allowing you to actually eat more calories without gaining weight.

How can we lose and keep off extra fat? You need to increase your resting metabolic rate (RMR), which is the pace your body burns calories at rest. Your RMR is closely linked to the amount of muscle you have–remember, muscle burns more calories than fat. Adding muscle will raise your RMR and will greatly increase the chance that the weight loss (more accurately fat loss) will be maintained.

Contrary to what many people think, strength training is as important, maybe more important to successful fat loss than aerobic exercise. The reason lies in the amount of calories that are burned when you aren’t exercising.

Let’s say you happen to be quite obese and you have a high percentage of body fat. I used to be in that situation; I know what it feels like. Underneath that body fat you actually have a very strong skeleton and strong muscles. Your body has built up those muscles in order to carry all of that extra body fat when you move your body. Just the very act of standing up, walking across a parking lot, going up a flight of stairs or lifting your arms requires more effort when you’re overweight, especially if you’re obese. So the heavier you are, the stronger your muscles have to be just to allow you to do basic, everyday things.

The solution to all of this, the strategy I want to focus on here, is to engage in strength training while you are losing body fat. If you do this, then you will be able to maintain the muscle mass that you already have underneath your body fat while you are in the process of losing the fat. This will leave you with a greater proportion of lean body mass to body fat, meaning that you will be slimmer, yet you’ll have the muscles that you had when you were overweight.

If you get rid of enough body fat in this way, then those muscles may begin to show — if you’re a man. If you’re a woman, don’t worry. You’re never going to bulk up. A lot of women are mistakenly afraid of strength training. They think that if they pump a few weights they’re going to turn into Lou Ferrigno overnight. They think they’re going to have this competition muscle-bound body from lifting a couple of weights. Believe me, that is not the case at all. Most of those bodybuilding women are using steroids, and they’ve trained for years, even decades, just to produce that kind of muscle mass. Women are not built to puts on lots of muscle mass, so don’t be afraid that you’ll bulk up. Women who are afraid of exercising because they think it’s going to make them look bigger have it all wrong.

Strength training and weight loss are so important for overweight people because strength training and weight loss leads to a healthy life, a nice body and will keep you in a good shape.

Astronaut Evolution

Filed under: Story — admin @ 11:13 am

Space has forever been an interest of humans. From ancient times to today, the unknown of what’s out there has intrigued generations. It only makes sense that astronauts have achieved a celebrity-like status in our society, this group of few who have ventured further away from the planet than most ever will. Public interest in space exploration has died off significantly since the 60s and 70s but that may be only a temporary problem.

Before the Moon had a flag on it, before any known modern day human had circumnavigated the globe from a few miles up, before a docking station was set up in space there was no face to associate space exploration with. Once John Glenn and Alan Shepard got up there and did their thing the public finally had someone to get behind and go along for the ride with. Heck, even Coco or Bongo or whatever that primate’s name was who went up on trial runs made the front page.

Finding a face to get behind isn’t the only thing the public needs to become interested in enough to pay attention. There has to be a mission. Something grand, something important, something cool and new that hasn’t been done before. More importantly, there has to be a reason for the mission. The space race was a race against Russia and the competition surrounding that made a lot of people get behind the space agency. There was and adversary and a reason for success. These days there is no political reason (yet) to get to Mars first. There is talk of going back to the Moon but, even if Nasa does realize that goal, I don’t see citizens getting behind the task as much as they did when Neil Armstrong and his crew blasted off.

I fear that the astronauts of the past are a breed gone for good. The tricky party is to now find a person or group of people who the public will surely get behind. Perhaps the space program should take a cue from what goes on in the political arena. They should look for someone who the public seems to like a great deal, at least enough to elect into office, someone who may have become famous in another line of work before having any political aspirations. They of course have to find someone with a look or personality unique to no other and they need to make sure that this person would be up to the physical challenge. Needless to say, this individual had to look good on camera.

By way of reasonable deduction the only person left to consider is Arnold Schwarzenegger. If he can’t get the constitution changed so that he can run for president perhaps he would consider this line of work. I’m sure he could work out a deal with Nasa and get some real estate on the red planet, or perhaps, if he expresses disinterest, a few thousand acres can be dangled in front of him as aeronautic bate.

What does this say about society and the average citizen? I’d rather not think about that. In any case, it would at least be entertaining to see Terminator in Space. Perhaps James Cameron would be interested in going along for the ride with his Digital 8.

Rodeo Drive – Where the Rich and Famous Shop

Filed under: Story — admin @ 11:13 am

Although the stretch of stores on Rodeo Drive are only three blocks long, this perhaps the most sought after shopping destination in LA. This stretch of shopping begins at Wilshire Boulevard on the south and runs north towards Santa Monica Boulevard where the commercial section of the street melt away into an affluent up market residential area.

Shopping here is probably a little bit too expensive for the average tourist, however one may console one self by looking at the rich and famous or engaging in a very expensive “window shopping” spree. The world’s most celebrated designer brands and clothesline have outlets on this stretch of road; Armani, Christina Dior, Ralph Lauren and Tiffany are just a few. According statistics Rodeo Drive is actually the home of the world’s most expensive store located at 420, Bijan Drive and owned by an Iranian businessman; the average shopper spends about 100,000 dollars per visit. One needs to make an appointment to shop here for expensive men’s fashion, a pair of socks cost 50 dollars and a suit costs 15,000 dollars, their well known shoppers include US President George Bush, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Tom Cruise and Tony Blair.

The part about rodeo drive that tourist love is actually the areas newest addition, known as “Two Rodeo” and located at the north east corner of Wilshire and Rodeo. This is actually two narrow streets that run parallel to each other, the architecture is meant to reflect a tree lined romantic European avenue and was the only new street built in Beverly Hill in the last 75 years.

“Two Rodeo” for most visitors will resemble a movie set, it creates an illusion of free standing store fronts .The combination of old world cobblestones, romantic archways, fountains and an Italianate piazza also makes this the most picturesque part of Rodeo Drive. The best time to visit the enticing Rodeo Drive is during the night, as the colorful lights illuminate the streets and during Christmas time yuletide displays, nativity scenes and fairy lights adorn store fronts.

A number of Beverly Hills hotels can be located in the close vicinity of Rodeo Drive; some of the world’s best and most famous luxury hotels are in Beverly Hills and offer comfortable accommodation with classy service.

Venice Beach – The People Watching Capital of Southern California

Filed under: Story — admin @ 11:13 am

The beach experience isn’t always just about sun and sand. One of the most enjoyable parts of any time spent at the beach is checking out everything and everyone around you. At most beaches, that means skimpy bikinis and the odd kite-flying youngster. At Venice Beach in Los Angeles, it’s a different story entirely. On any given day, juggling street performers delight the crowd, caricaturists draw unflattering works of art, and straining weightlifters glisten in the heat. All of this makes Venice unlike any other beach in the world, certain to thrill every visitor.

“Venice of America” was created as a beach resort in 1905. The initial grounds came complete with an aquarium, bathhouses, and an amusement park. Developers dug several canals to drain marshes, establishing the parallel with the Italian city of the same name. Few of the original canals remain, but the houses running alongside them have been renovated and restored to their original grandeur.

From its initial development until the 1950’s, the Los Angeles municipal government maintained a hands-off policy towards Venice Beach. As infrastructure crumbled in the latter half of the 20th century, the city stepped in and ordered the demolition of over 550 buildings. This rebirth infused Venice with a new energy, and as the 1960’s opened, characters from across the board began pouring in. In many ways, Venice Beach was the Haight-Ashbury of southern California. The liberal, free environment gave rise to acts like The Doors.

This atmosphere still prevails today, with the population of Venice a veritable melting pot of different races, cultures, and attitudes. All of these people come together to make Venice one of the funkiest spots in America.

While the three mile long beach is available for swimming, that’s not what most people envision when they think of Venice. The most famous icon of Venice Beach is the Gold’s Gym, once home to now-Governator Arnold Schwarzenegger. Today, an enormous “weight pen” supplies wannabe Terminators with the equipment they require, all while spectators gawk from bleachers.

Running along the boardwalk are a number of shops and eateries that cater to the eclectic tastes of Venice Beach residents and visitors. You can purchase anything from t-shirts to tattoos. That’s not the only art in Venice. Most buildings are adorned with grafittied murals depicting a variety of subjects. Formerly a free for all, artists must now obtain permits before starting their work.

Even though the majority of the action takes place on the boardwalk and streets, the beach itself certainly deserves some mention. Venice has one of the better surf breaks in Los Angeles. Volleyball and handball courts abound, inviting you to work up a sweat. There are also a ton of picnic benches and tables, so takeout from any of the great restaurants on the promenade can make for an inexpensive, fun meal.

Venice is a great spot to check out while you’re in LA. Don’t be intimidated by the brawny weightlifters and tattooed outcasts: everyone can enjoy the madness that makes up this incredibly unique beach.

Filed under: Story — admin @ 11:13 am

Nowadays people don’t use weight loss workouts as often as they should. Jobs are usually sedentary and time is at a premium. We need to commit to regular fitness though if we are looking to lose fat.

There is a difficulty in finding time to complete our weight loss workouts these days – I mean who wants to leave work at 6pm and head straight for the gym?! I can throw all benefits of exercise at you such as it helps you lose weight, lowers the risk of many diseases, simulates the mind as well as the body.

At the end of the day it’s perfectly understandable that people aren’t prepared to give up hours of their free time traveling to the gym and working out 6 days a week in order to lose a couple of pounds of weight.

How about I told you exactly how you can lose weight in the comfort of your own home, at a time that’s convenient for you? Working smart can lead to a huge reduction in weight – using these strategies will help you keep your weight loss workouts down to 45 minutes 3-4 times per week.

You have to be intelligent and scientific when it comes to your exercise. Learn how you can optimize your training by reading and researching articles like this one and listen to the professionals – they are the ones who have been there and done it!

Interval Training

This type of training has been shown to be one of the most effective ways to lose fat. None of your weight loss workouts are complete without it. Various exercise forms such as running, rowing, cycling or the elliptical machine can be employed to complete a high intensity interval routine.

The basic idea is that you workout at a high level of effort for short periods of time and follow these with a short period of recovery utilizing the same form of exercise. For example if you were using running as your exercise form you would jog during the recovery phase and run fast during the intense phase.

Science has shown that this kind of training helps elevate your metabolic rate far more than more traditional methods of exercise. Because metabolism is directly linked to fat loss you’ll notice your body loses fat far faster than previously.

Weight Training

Weight training should play a part of your weight loss workouts if you want to optimize your fat loss. Go out and purchase some dumbbells!

There are many myths when it comes to weight training. People believe that they will look like Arnold Schwarzenegger if they even use them once a week! The fact is that weight training is great for burning fat, this is because the amount of muscle you have directly relates to how much fat your body burns on a daily basis. None of your weight loss workouts will be as effective as they could be until you start to use weights!

When you increase the size of your muscles you begin to elevate your resting metabolic rate. This metabolic rate directly relates to how many calories are burnt on a daily basis and studies have suggested that as many as 50 calories can be burnt each day per pound of lean muscle.

If you can work at a high intensity during a weights session you will also help boost your metabolic rate to a very high level for as many as 38 hours post workout. By keeping sessions fast and furious you optimize your weight loss workouts and lose pounds in a very short period of time. Use heavy weights and workout no longer than 45 minutes at a time.

What Time To Exercise?

In my view the best time for exercise is the morning and this opinion is backed up by numerous studies. Obviously your work schedule is going to determine when you are able to exercise regularly and it is vital that you are fully energized before commencing any fitness workout, especially as we now know that they need to be intense!

Morning workout sessions are preferred by many because it is easier to make a habit of something if done first thing. In general there are less distractions in the early morning and if more time is needed to complete a workout rising slightly earlier is always an option. In summer, mornings are cooler and air pollution is at its lowest so training then makes common sense

The biggest benefits of morning weight loss workouts are purely scientific however. In the morning after exercise you will have elevated your metabolic rate which helps your body to burn off the calories that you consume during the day more efficiently.

These early morning workouts will also boost your energy levels for the day ahead and improve your mental acuity – something which may come in handy when you are negotiating the next big deal or trying to get the kids to school! Exercise consistently do so early in the day. It is easier to form the exercise habit through morning exercise.

Stretching And Rest

Did you know that stretching and rest are both absolutely essential if you are to maximize your weight loss workouts. Stretching opens up you muscles and increases flexibility. Regular stretching exercises help with your balance and improve your muscle’s recovery time.

Give your body a chance to recover – a common mistake made by lots of people new to regular exercise (and some who should know better!) is to train too hard too often. Our bodies need rest, this is when the real changes take place – rest helps your muscles to repair and grow. Give yourself a complete day off at least once every two days and you will notice how much better you feel, energized and ready for action!
